Southern Flinders Life
Southern Flinders Life Healthy Communities Initiative is a Federal Government Funded Initiative. It is a partnership of the five council regions of Mount Remarkable, Port Pirie, Northern Areas, Peterborough, and Orroroo/Carrieton catering for people aged 18 and over. The program encourages the participation and whole of community approach to healthy living and tackles the ongoing issues of overweight, obesity and chronic disease.
Some of the outcomes of the project will include new activities such as community gardens, gyms, walking groups and healthy lifestyle education and training programs.

No matter what age, we all need regular physical activity for good physical and mental health. It is recommended that adults include at least 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity physical activity on most, if not all days of the week.
Walking is a great way to be active. It is:
- Simple - no instructors or membership needed
- Inexpensive - no special equipment involved
- Achievable - can be done nearly anywhere, anytime
- Easy - just get up and walk
When you go for a walk it’s not just your body that benefits, the way you think and feel changes too. The world looks better and brighter.
What’s been happening
During September community members were given the opportunity to participate in a FREE GARDEN WORKSHOP presented by Karen Montgomery.
Horticulturist Karen has extensive experience working with Adelaide Botanic Gardens, presenting gardening workshops and running horticultural courses in the community. In these community workshops, participants learnt how to grow their very own edible garden in a box. Participants received a fully set up garden box to take home-(including seedlings) and hands on assistance to set up and maintain their instant garden.
Seven community sessions were conducted including 3 school/preschool visits from the 23rd September to 27th September 2013. The workshop was well received with more than 200 participants over five towns participating in this experience.
Karen will be back from 18th to 22nd November to deliver the next series of garden workshops ‘Worm Farming’ at more locations across the region.
